Day 10 (10/09) – First Visit to Møns Klint

Posted under Denmark Tour 2014

Having settled in and explored the camp site on the previous day, we cycled to Møns Klint for our first look around. We visited the exhibition centre which was excellent – very informative and very interesting and well presented. We spent a happy afternoon looking around.

Day 8 (08/09) Stubbekøbing to Møns Klint via the Bogø ferry

Posted under Denmark Tour 2014

We arose early to strike camp at Stubbekøbing. We left the car there on site having agreed a parking fee with the site owner, and told him we would return in a few days time.

We left the campsite to catch the 10:00 ferry to Bogø. The ferry port was a convenient short ride down the road from the campsite of 10-15 minutes.

The ferry was a pleasant journey, and we journeyed on the ferry with one of the cyclists we had met the night before at the camp site. Having reached Bogø we said farewell to our travel companion who was journeying north, and started the ride from Bogø  to the west side of Møn which took us over the bridge linking the two islands.

The route was pleasant – fairly level and easy going for most of the way, and the weather was good. We stopped around half way at Stege for lunch at a cafe, and continued the ride to Møns Klint which was on the far east side of the island.  We passed several wind farms on the way – Denmark is noted for its use of renewable energy.

The final stage of the ride on the ascent to Møns Klint was exceptionally hilly in places and fully justified the addition of the Schlumpf Mountain Drive for use when towing the fully laden trailer! We needed the second lowest gear we had in places, but managed to ride all the way up every hill.

We arrived at the campsite shortly after 4pm, roughly when we expected. The campsite was lovely, with an separate tent field in a wooded area which we decided on straight away.

The ameneties block had several nests of swallows in the roof, and we took a number of photos.

Day 7 (07/09) – Travel from Faaborg to Stubbekøbing

Posted under Denmark Tour 2014

We struck camp at Faaborg and wished the campsite a final farewell before making our way by car to Stubbekøbing.
We drove to Svendborg, then crossed the bridge to the Island of Tåsinge. Having crossed Tåsinge we took another bridge accross to the Island of Langeland, joining it at Rudkøbing and heading for the ferry port at Spodsberg. We stopped for a sandwich at the ferry port whilst waiting for the ferry, and then took the ferry across to Tårs on the Island of Lolland.

We then crossed Lolland and took the bridge on the E47 to the Island of Falster, and headed for Stubbekøbing, ariving there to pitch camp at around 4pm.

We had crossed four islands in a single day – starting from Faaborg on the island of Funen we then had crossed Tåsinge, Langeland and Lolland followed by the final crossing to Falster.

This day of lengthy travel confirmed our approach in using a combination of car and tandem for the holiday. We would love to have cycle toured for the whole trip, but just did not have the time to take a month or more to tour around. It just was not possible to see all the places we wanted to visit entirely by bike in the time available. Whilst using a train for part of the trip is possible with a bike, with a tandem and trailer we would have had serious difficulties booking and getting a train which would have limited the trip. The benefit of having our own car gave complete freedom to our logistical planning – we could travel by car when and where we liked, and cycle tour the rest. The only limitation was that after touring an area by tandem we had to return to pick up the car, but in practice this worked out fine.

Day 6 (06/09) – Return to Faaborg

Posted under Denmark Tour 2014

We struck camp at Ærøskøbing, hooked up the trailer and cycled back to the ferry port at Søby, then took the ferry back to Faaborg.

We stopped for a pleasant lunch and a drink at a waterside cafe in Faaborg, restocked with food at the local supermarket, and then returned to the campsite we had stayed at before, to pitch tent for a final night’s stay before moving on again.
